Londonโs largest airport has issued a warning regarding an expected decline in passenger numbers for the remainder of the year, citing the ongoing instability in the Middle East following the outbreak of conflict involving Iran.
According to officials at Heathrow Airport, nearly 18.9 million travelers passed through the West London hubโs four terminals during the first quarter of the year.
This represents a 3.7% increase compared to the same period last year. However, authorities clarified that this growth was largely driven by “temporary demand shifts” from other regions rather than sustainable growth.
The closure of airspace across the Middle Eastโprecipitated by U.S. and Israeli airstrikes against Iran in Marchโhas significantly disrupted global flight paths. These geopolitical tensions are already having a wider economic impact on the aviation industry; notably, U.S.-based Spirit Airlines recently declared bankruptcy, citing surging jet fuel prices as a primary factor.
