Doha, Qatar — Qatar has announced the death of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, a leader widely credited with transforming the small Gulf state into a major economic, diplomatic, and media power on the international stage.
Sheikh Hamad, who died at the age of 74, is remembered as one of the most influential Arab leaders of his generation. During his rule from 1995 to 2013, he oversaw a period of rapid modernization that changed Qatar’s global position and reshaped the balance of influence in the Gulf region.
He came to power in 1995 after taking over leadership from his father, Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani. His rise marked a significant turning point in Qatar’s modern history, with the country adopting a more independent foreign policy and pursuing a greater role in regional and international affairs.
In 2013, Sheikh Hamad stepped down and transferred power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who became Qatar’s current Emir.
Building a More Independent Qatar
When Sheikh Hamad assumed power, he pursued a strategy focused on using Qatar’s vast natural gas reserves to strengthen the country’s economy and international influence.
Under his leadership, Qatar became one of the world’s wealthiest countries, with major investments in energy, infrastructure, education, and national development. The country’s rapid economic growth dramatically improved living standards and gave Qatar greater political independence from larger neighboring states.
His leadership also introduced a more assertive foreign policy, allowing Qatar to establish relationships with countries across different political camps, including Iran, Iraq, and Israel, while maintaining strong ties with Western allies.
The Creation of Al Jazeera and Qatar’s Global Voice
One of Sheikh Hamad’s most significant decisions was the establishment of Al Jazeera in 1996.
The satellite network quickly became one of the most influential media organizations in the Middle East, covering major political events, conflicts, and regional developments. Its global reach gave Qatar a powerful voice far beyond its geographic size.
The creation of Al Jazeera became a symbol of Qatar’s ambition to become an important player in regional affairs and international diplomacy.
Strengthening Defense and National Institutions
During his rule, Sheikh Hamad also focused on developing Qatar’s defense capabilities and strengthening state institutions.
Having previously served as Qatar’s Minister of Defense, he used his military background to expand the country’s security structures and improve its strategic position in the Gulf.
Qatar’s Role in Gaza and Regional Diplomacy
Sheikh Hamad was also known for Qatar’s involvement in humanitarian and reconstruction efforts in Palestine, particularly in Gaza.
In 2012, he became the first Arab leader to visit Gaza since restrictions were imposed on the territory in 2007. During that visit, he announced an increase in Qatar’s financial support for reconstruction projects, raising the aid package from approximately $254 million to $400 million.
The visit highlighted Qatar’s growing diplomatic role in regional conflicts and humanitarian issues.
From Small Gulf State to Global Influence
During Sheikh Hamad’s leadership, Qatar moved from being a small Gulf country with limited international influence to becoming a state with significant economic power, global media influence, and an active diplomatic presence.
Observers have described his era as a period in which Qatar successfully used its energy wealth, international partnerships, and strategic diplomacy to gain influence far beyond what its size would normally suggest.
His legacy is often associated with three major pillars:
- Economic transformation through natural gas development
- The creation of Al Jazeera as a global media platform
- An independent foreign policy that expanded Qatar’s international role
The death of Sheikh Hamad marks the end of an era for Qatar, but the institutions and global influence built during his leadership continue to shape the country’s position in the Middle East and beyond.
