wo U.S. soldiers have been reported missing during a major military training exercise in Morocco, according to the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). The service members disappeared on Saturday while participating in African Lion 2026, an annual joint exercise designed to strengthen coordination between U.S. forces, NATO allies, and African nations.
The soldiers went missing near the Cap Draa training area, located close to the city of Tan Tan. A massive search and rescue operation is currently in progress, involving land, air, and sea assets from the United States, Morocco, and other international partners.
“This incident is still under investigation, and the search continues,” AFRICOM stated in a press release. “Our focus remains on the soldiers and their families”.
African Lion is the largest joint military exercise on the continent, with maneuvers conducted across Morocco, Ghana, Senegal, and Tunisia. The 2026 iteration involves approximately 5,000 personnel from over 40 countries and is scheduled to run from April 27 through May 8. The training focuses on multi-domain operations and regional security readiness.
