U.S. President Donald Trump has stirred controversy by comparing the U.S. Navy’s maritime tactics to “piracy” while discussing the ongoing blockade of Iranian ports. According to reports from Agence France-Presse (AFP), the President made the comments during a campaign rally in Florida, where he praised the seizure of Iranian vessels and their cargo.
“We boarded the ship and took control. We took the cargo and the oil. It’s a very profitable business,” Trump told a cheering crowd. He went on to explicitly embrace the comparison to high-seas raiding, stating, “We’re like pirates. In a way, we’re pirates, but we don’t play games.”
The remarks follow a significant military engagement approximately two weeks ago in the Gulf of Oman. According to the President, U.S. Navy personnel opened fire on and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship after it attempted to break the American naval blockade.
These aggressive maritime maneuvers come at a time of extreme regional tension. Legal experts have been sounding the alarm over Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran’s plans to impose “transit taxes” on ships passing through the waterway.
The current crisis escalated following the launch of joint U.S. and Israeli airstrikes against Iran on February 28. In response to the failed peace negotiations last month, the United States officially declared a total blockade of Iranian ports, leading to the current high-stakes confrontations at sea.
