Rafah Border Opens on Limited Basis After Nearly Two Years of Closure
-Thousands of sick and wounded Palestinians are anxiously waiting to leave Gaza for urgent medical treatment abroad after Israel reopened the Rafah border crossing with Egypt under strict limitations.
The crossing, which had been closed for nearly two years, is expected to operate for approximately six hours per day. According to health officials,
only 150 people will be permitted to exit Gaza daily, while around 50 individuals will be allowed to enter the enclave.
Medical authorities in Gaza report that at least 1,268 people died while waiting for medical evacuation during the closure of the Rafah crossing.
Doctors warn that the death toll could rise further unless evacuation procedures are significantly expanded.
The reopening comes amid ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza, where more than 71,800 Palestinians have been killed and over 171,500 wounded since October 2023.
Meanwhile, approximately 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7 attacks, with around 250 taken captive.
Health workers and humanitarian groups say the limited reopening falls far short of Gazaโs urgent medical needs and are calling for immediate, unrestricted access for patients requiring life-saving care.
