States should tax windfall oil profits to fund their way out of crisis

ABU DHABI/BEIRUT — Regional instability has reached a critical stage as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) reported that its air defense systems intercepted a barrage of ballistic and cruise missiles launched from Iran. This escalation follows a confirmed drone strike that ignited a major fire at an oil facility in Fujairah. While the UAE and international leaders have condemned the assault, an Iranian military official reportedly told state media that Tehran had no prior plan to target the UAE.

Simultaneously, the conflict has widened in the north, with the Israeli military issuing urgent forced displacement orders for residents in the southern Lebanese towns of Jabsheet and Sarafand. Civilians were commanded to evacuate immediately, moving at least 1,000 meters away from areas allegedly linked to Hezbollah operations.

In response to the strikes on UAE infrastructure, European Council President Antonio Costa joined global leaders in expressing solidarity with Abu Dhabi, describing the attacks as “unjustified violations of international law”. Costa urged Iran to return to the negotiating table to prevent the total collapse of the regional ceasefire and to ensure the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
