Expanding Political Ties Between Somaliland and Israel
#BREAKING: Dr. Mohamed Hagi, former Somaliland representative to Taiwan, has been appointed as Somaliland’s new ambassador to Israel.
Dr. Hagi previously served as Somaliland’s envoy to Taiwan, a diplomatic post that drew regional attention at the time due to Taiwan’s own contested international status.
His new appointment signals what observers describe as a widening diplomatic engagement between Somaliland and Israel.
According to reports, President Muse Bihi Abdi is expected to travel to Tel Aviv next month for an official visit.
Israeli officials have also indicated that Israel may soon appoint its own diplomatic representative to Somaliland.
Background and Political ContextDr. Hagi is said to hail from the Habar Awal clan, specifically the Sacad Muuse sub-clan — a detail that has drawn domestic political discussion within Somaliland.
So far, there has been no official statement from the Federal Government of Somalia regarding the reported diplomatic developments.
Likewise, no formal response has been issued by the United Nations or major international stakeholders.
International actors have historically reaffirmed Somalia’s territorial integrity,
and analysts suggest that any formal diplomatic exchange between Israel and Somaliland could generate regional and international debate.
What to WatchIf confirmed at the highest diplomatic levels, the exchange of ambassadors would represent a significant step in Somaliland’s foreign policy outreach strategy.
Further updates are expected as official statements emerge from the involved parties.
