Passengers Describe Chaos as Russian Drone Hits Civilian Train in Eastern Ukraine
Panic swept through a crowded passenger train in eastern Ukraine after it was targeted by Russian drones, leaving five people dead and triggering a dramatic rescue effort led by a military officer traveling onboard.
According to passengers, chaos erupted when one of the trainโs carriages was struck, forcing people to dive to the floor as explosions shook the train.
A Ukrainian soldier on the journey immediately ordered everyone to evacuate, a decision that likely saved many lives just moments before the carriage caught fire.
The train was traveling from western Ukraine toward a station near the eastern front lines and was carrying nearly 300 passengers at the time of the attack.
Officials said the first drone landed close to the train, bringing it to a halt, before additional drones followed.
Witnesses described hearing the sound of another drone moments before a powerful blast shattered parts of the carriage.
Realizing the train could be hit again, the officer urged passengers to move quickly away from the burning cars toward a nearby road, as remaining close posed serious danger.
The carriage that took the direct hit was rapidly engulfed in flames. While the soldier said he was mentally prepared for such situations due to his military background, many civilians were overwhelmed by shock, having come dangerously close to death.
Videos from the scene show distressed passengers, including families with children, fleeing the train while crying and screaming.
After ensuring people had moved to a safer area, the officer returned to the train with others to search for anyone left behind.
During the inspection, bodies were found inside the damaged carriages, confirming the loss of five lives.
In the final carriage, the soldier discovered a frightened young woman holding her baby. She had little time to gather belongings and was struggling to understand what to do next.
Later, it emerged that she had been traveling so her husband, a soldier near the front line, could see their child.
The attack was strongly condemned by Ukrainian leadership, who described it as terrorism.
The strike hit a core symbol of the countryโs resilience โ the railway network โ which millions of civilians depend on for travel due to the closure of Ukrainian airspace since the start of the war.
Despite repeated attacks on infrastructure, Ukraineโs rail system has largely continued operating, though growing security threats and harsh conditions have caused disruptions.
In response to the deadly strike, railway stations across the country lowered flags and observed a moment of silence in honor of the victims.
Rail services on the affected route were later restored, though authorities warned that safety concerns remain high as attacks on civilian transport continue.
