NATO Chief Warns Europe Cannot Defend Itself Without the United States
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has stated that Europe is not capable of defending itself without the United States.โIf anyone believes that the European Union, or Europe as a whole, can defend itself without the United States, they should continue dreaming,โ Rutte said. โThey cannot, and neither can we. We need each other.โThis assessment is widely viewed as realistic, given that Europe is an aging continent where traditional concepts of territorial defense, nationalism, religious ties, and strong family and community bonds have significantly weakened.Europeโs long-standing dependence on the United States since the end of World War II has gradually reduced its military capacity and diminished its strategic focus on defense and security matters.
Over time, reliance on Washingtonโs protection has led many European nations to scale back their own military ambitions and investments.
Rutteโs remarks highlight the continued strategic importance of the transatlantic alliance, particularly at a time when global security challenges are intensifying and NATO faces increasing pressure to maintain unity and readiness.
