A powerful winter storm has brought historic snowfall and dangerous blizzard conditions across the northeastern
United States, forcing travel bans, grounding thousands of flights, and leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity.
The storm, described by meteorologists as a โbomb cyclone,โ has dumped between one and three feet of snow across several states since Sunday.
More than 30 million people remain under blizzard warnings as strong winds and heavy snowfall continue to create whiteout conditions.
Record-Breaking SnowfallSeveral states have reported more than two feet of snow.
In Providence, snowfall surpassed previous historical records, making it the cityโs largest snowstorm on record.
Other areas in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut have also recorded snowfall totals exceeding two feet.
In New York City, the storm ranks among the top ten largest snowstorms in recorded history.
Nearby Newark experienced one of its heaviest snowfalls since records began in 1931.
Travel DisruptionsAir travel has been severely affected, with more than 10,000 flights canceled nationwide.
Major airports including Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport,
and Boston Logan International Airport have reported widespread cancellations and delays.Parts of Massachusetts,
Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, and New Hampshire remain under travel restrictions.
Authorities have urged residents to stay off roads unless absolutely necessary due to dangerous visibility and snow-covered highways.
Power Outages and Emergency ResponseThe combination of heavy, wet snow and wind gusts exceeding 70 mph has caused extensive power outages across the region.
Approximately 650,000 customers remain without electricity.Utility crews have faced major challenges restoring power,
as blocked roads and ongoing wind conditions have slowed response efforts.
Emergency vehicles, including ambulances and snowplows, have also struggled to navigate snow-covered streets in several communities.
Local and state officials have declared states of emergency and mobilized thousands of sanitation workers, plows,
and emergency personnel to clear roads and assist residents.
Warming centers have been opened in affected areas to support vulnerable populations.
When Will the Storm End?
Forecasters say snowfall is gradually tapering off in parts of the Northeast, though coastal areas in New England may continue to see snow into the evening.
Even after snowfall ends, strong winds are expected to cause drifting snow and reduced visibility overnight.
Officials warn that recovery efforts, including power restoration and snow removal, may take several days as communities assess the full impact of the historic storm.
