Tehran Disputes US Claims on Iran Protest Death Toll
Iran’s Foreign Minister has rejected recent US statements alleging that tens of thousands of civilians were killed during nationwide protests, calling on Washington to provide evidence to support such claims.
Abbas Araghchi said Tehran has already published official figures documenting 3,117 deaths during what Iranian authorities describe as “recent terrorist operations,” including roughly 200 security personnel.
He challenged any party disputing the data to present verifiable proof.
The remarks follow US claims that the death toll reached 32,000 over a relatively short period, statements made by the US president during public remarks last week.
The protests, which began as demonstrations over economic conditions,
escalated into violent clashes, according to official Iranian data.
Authorities have accused foreign actors, including the United States and Israel, of supporting what they characterize as rioting and terrorism.
Diplomatic efforts continue amid heightened tensions in the region.
Iran and the United States recently resumed nuclear negotiations in Muscat, Oman, followed by talks in Geneva, while the Persian Gulf has seen increased military activity from both sides.
The US has suggested military options could be considered within days if diplomacy does not yield results.
