US Civil Rights Leader Jesse Jackson Dies at 84
-Jesse Jackson, the influential US civil rights leader, has passed away at the age of 84.
Jackson, who was a major figure in the 1960s civil rights movement,
โdied peacefullyโ on Tuesday morning, as confirmed by a statement from his family.
His unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and human rights not only shaped a significant part of the civil rights movement in the US but also sparked global efforts towards freedom and dignity.
โOur father was a servant leader โ not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless,
and the overlooked around the world,โ the Jackson family said in their statement.
Jackson, closely associated with civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr,was present when MLK was assassinated at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis in 1968.
His time with King and the traumatic events surrounding Kingโs death had a profound impact on him.
Reflecting on the assassination, Jackson expressed how it โtraumatisedโ him, but he emphasized that MLKโs dreams lived on in the hearts of millions.
In the aftermath of Kingโs death, Jackson continued his legacy through the Chicago-based organization, Operation PUSH,
aimed at improving the economic, social, and political conditions for Black Americans.
He went on to form the National Rainbow Coalition, which merged with Operation PUSH.
The coalition advocated for equal rights and political representation for marginalized groups, including the LGBTQ+ community.
Jackson’s bids for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988 were unsuccessful,
but they played a significant role in mobilizing marginalized groups and raising awareness about the struggles they faced.
One of his most memorable speeches was delivered at the 1988 Democratic National Convention, where he encouraged Americans to stand tall despite adversity.
โI was born in the slum, but the slum was not born in me. And it wasnโt born in you,
and you can make it,โ Jackson declared, inspiring hope and resilience in those listening.
Later in life, Jacksonโs health began to decline, and he was diagnosed with Parkinsonโs disease in 2017.
Despite this, Jackson remained a staunch advocate for various progressive causes, notably pushing for COVID-19 vaccinations among Black Americans,
who were disproportionately affected by the pandemic and had lower vaccination rates compared to white Americans.
Jesse Jacksonโs death marks the end of an era in the fight for civil rights, but his legacy lives on.
His work will be remembered for his tireless efforts to create a more just and equitable society for all people, particularly marginalized communities.
