The conflict between the United States and Iran has entered a dangerous new phase after Washington launched one of its largest military operations in recent years, targeting dozens of strategic sites across southern Iran following attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces carried out extensive precision strikes on Tuesday night against more than 80 military targets, including Iranian air defense systems, coastal radar installations, command-and-control centers, anti-ship missile batteries, and naval infrastructure believed to be linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The operation followed attacks on three civilian-crewed commercial ships, including Saudi Arabian and Qatari oil tankers navigating the Strait of Hormuzโone of the world’s most critical maritime energy corridors. US officials said the strikes were intended to protect international shipping and restore freedom of navigation after what Washington described as an unacceptable escalation.
Iran has not officially confirmed nor denied responsibility for the attacks on the commercial vessels.
Explosions Reported Across Strategic Southern Iran
Iranian state media confirmed multiple explosions in several key locations along the country’s southern coastline, including:
Sirik Port
Bandar Abbas
Qeshm Island
Kharg Island
These areas are strategically important because they host naval facilities, energy infrastructure, missile deployments, and shipping operations overlooking the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s state broadcaster (IRIB) claimed many of the explosions occurred near civilian infrastructure, reporting that several people were injured after shrapnel struck the commercial pier in Sirik. Independent verification of those claims has not yet been possible.
Tehran Warns of Severe Retaliation
Iran’s Khatam-al-Anbiya Central Headquarters condemned the American operation as a “blatant act of aggression” and warned that the country’s armed forces would deliver what it described as a “crushing response.”
Military officials also insisted that Iran would continue exercising authority over navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, arguing that commercial vessels should use routes designated by Tehran.
The statement signals that Iran is unlikely to soften its position despite growing international pressure, raising fears that further military confrontation could spread across the Gulf region.
Oil Waiver Revoked
In another significant move, Washington revoked a temporary waiver that had allowed Iran to continue limited oil exports under an interim peace understanding signed between the two countries on June 17.
The decision effectively restores tighter economic pressure on Tehran while military tensions continue to escalate, suggesting that diplomatic efforts have once again stalled.
Funeral Procession for Iran’s Supreme Leader
Meanwhile, the coffin of Iran’s slain Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, arrived in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf, where funeral ceremonies are expected to draw senior religious figures, regional allies, and thousands of mourners.
The procession comes at a time when Iran’s leadership is facing simultaneous military pressure, political uncertainty, and mounting regional tensions.
Analysis: Risk of a Wider Regional Conflict Growing
The latest exchange represents one of the most serious military confrontations between Washington and Tehran in years. By targeting dozens of military facilities simultaneously, the United States appears to be attempting to weaken Iran’s ability to threaten shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz without launching a full-scale ground war.
However, Tehran’s promise of retaliation significantly raises the risk of a broader regional conflict. Analysts warn that any sustained disruption of the Strait of Hormuzโwhich carries roughly one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil supplyโcould send global energy prices sharply higher, disrupt international trade, and draw additional regional powers into the crisis.
With diplomacy appearing increasingly fragile and military actions intensifying, the coming days may determine whether the confrontation remains limited or expands into a much larger Middle East conflict.
