Lebanon is a country in which the landscape is experiencing a rapid and violent change. Two UN Peacekeepers Killed in Explosion in Southern Lebanon as Tensions Escalate What started out as a localized military –action has evolved into a large scale campaign of atmospheric and structural devastation,
which is aimed at the very veins of the geography of the country.Since the south, with its coastal plains, to the traditionally safe Christian enclaves of the hills overlooking the capital, the explosions have become a permanent, pervasive characteristic of life. It is no longer a war opposing two armed sides,
but a process of destroying the capability of a country to operate, exist, and ultimately resume its normal operation.the Siege of Connectivity: Isloating the South. The military approach in the southern parts, especially south of the Litani river has changed to what analysts call, spatial isolation.
The offensive is virtually chopping the country into islands by targeting bridges, intersections and major transit routes. It is not only to prevent military movements it is to cut the lifeline of more than 150,000 civilians that are left behind in these places. The destruction of a bridge does not only result in the falling of concrete.
The supply of emergency medical aid, transfer of flour to local bakeries and the transportation of humanitarian convoys are all cut in a blink of a second. This is a re-enactment of 2006 strategies on a population that is much more susceptible now than it was twenty years ago.The Lebanese state is already bankrupt due to decades of economic disintegration and hyperinflation, and it does not have the resources to offer alternatives.
The impossibility of using these transport routes implies that thousands of families are no longer making a decision to remain or leave, but to survive in complete isolation. The Growth of the War:
No More Safe Zones.During several months, people in the capital and the neighboring mountain towns were under the illusion of safety.these regions, most of which were mostly Christian or religiously mixed,
were regarded as neutral grounds, which were a long way away, beyond the reach of political and armed movements. This week that illusion was broken.
Accurate attacks are being launched against residential houses in the hills towards the east of the capital. They are areas that had been home to thousands of displaced families that had taken shelter in the hope that no military personnel would be around to defend them.
These strikes have a psychological influence. In the case of an apartment in the third floor of a civilian building being targeted unexpectedly, the message that was delivered to the population was very clear: there is no place that is safe.
This growth has brought about a new generation of internal tension. With the people escaping the southern suburbs to these safe hills, the abrupt influx of strikes in these regions has caused people to scream and point fingers at one another. The Lebanese people are already struggling with the social fabric of the country that is already strained by displacement when the reality of seeking shelter makes them realize that the conflict has come to their door. The Ecnomic and development Toll.
The indirect effects of this campaign go way beyond the existing number of casualties.Experts in infrastructural development have cautioned that the planned destruction of houses and government infrastructure will put the nation several generations behind.
Whole districts are being swept away in a good part of the south towns, not as a by-product, but as a clearance policy. The Unthinkable Fall: US F-35 Stealth Fighter Allegedly Downed Over Iranian Territorythe cost of rebuilding these areas will be astronomical. In a nation where banking system is already down,
who will finance the rebuilding is still to be answered.Every bridge that was ruined and every power station that was destroyed symbolizes ten years of wasted development.
The weakness of the system implies that the revival will not be the question of pouring concrete easily;it will involve a complete re-invention of a national economy that is in the state of freefall at the moment. An Emerging Humanitarian Disaster. The price paid in human lives is appalling.
After more than a million displaced individuals, almost a fifth of the total population, Lebanon is in a crisis of massive proportions.Even beachfronts, schools, and parks have been converted to temporary camps. The healthcare system is straining, as hospitals are reporting cases of drone strikes in the immediate area,
which makes it almost impossible to safely work in the area of hospitals in the regional hubs.
The number of casualties, which involves a heartbreaking number of women, children, and foreign nationals, is not the full story. It is the actual tragedy of how hundreds of thousands of lives have been displaced, careers ruined and the education of a whole generation of children that has been permanently postponed.
Iran Marks 47th Anniversary as Mourners Vow Resistance Amid Rising War TensionsWith winter on its way, the absence of proper shelter of the displaced will endanger to transform a military crisis into a health crisis.
