Civilian Train Hit by Russian Drone in Eastern Ukraine, Causing Deadly Casualties
A civilian passenger train traveling in eastern Ukraine was struck by a Russian drone,
resulting in the deaths of at least five people and injuries to several others, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The attack occurred in the Kharkiv region and targeted a train carrying hundreds of passengers,
many of whom were civilians visiting relatives and soldiers near the front lines.
Emergency responders arriving at the scene encountered extensive destruction,
with parts of the train badly burned and scattered debris making it difficult to immediately assess the full scale of casualties.
Officials said the drone hit both the locomotive and one of the passenger carriages,
where dozens of people had been seated at the time.
Ukrainian leadership strongly condemned the strike,
describing it as an act of terrorism and emphasizing that attacks on civilian transport violate international humanitarian norms.
Authorities noted that while rail infrastructure has been targeted before, a direct hit on an active passenger train is rare and deeply alarming.
The national railway operator confirmed that the train was en route from western Ukraine toward a station close to the eastern front lines.

Following the incident, rail services in parts of the region were temporarily adjusted, with warnings issued to passengers about possible delays as security measures were reviewed.
Video footage released by Ukrainian officials showed flames and thick smoke rising from the damaged carriage, while passengers, including families with young children,
were seen evacuating into nearby wooded areas amid freezing conditions.
One widely shared clip showed a distressed mother being helped off the train with her infant.
Railway authorities announced a nationwide moment of silence to honor the victims and stated that safety wouldโ
take precedence over scheduling as Russia intensifies attacks on transport networks.
Additional strikes were reported in other parts of Ukraine overnight, including residential areas,
further underscoring the ongoing risks to civilians as the conflict continues.
