Thousands March in Nuuk and Copenhagen, Chanting “Greenland Is Not for Sale”
Thousands of Greenlanders and Danish supporters took to the streets this weekend in one of the largest –
demonstrations in recent history, rallying against renewed threats by the United States to exert control over the Arctic island.
In the capital city of Nuuk, a huge crowd marched through snow and ice toward the U.S.
consulate, waving Greenlandic flags and chanting “Greenland is not for sale” and “Kalaallit Nunaat,” the island’s name in the local language.
The protest, described as historic by organizers, drew a significant portion of the city’s population-
as people of all ages joined the march alongside their Prime Minister.
At the consulate, speeches reinforced Greenland’s determination to safeguard its autonomy and oppose any attempted annexation. Organizers said demonstrators rejected proposals suggesting the United States should take control of the self-governing Danish territory.
Simultaneous rallies also took place in Copenhagen, where protesters marched toward the U.S.
embassy, chanting “Hands off Greenland” and “No means no.” Many held red-and-white Greenlandic flags and reiterated calls for respect of Greenland’s sovereignty and democratic rights.
The demonstrations follow contentious comments by U.S. leadership about acquiring Greenland for strategic reasons, a stance that has provoked widespread diplomatic tension. European allies have condemned the rhetoric, emphasizing the importance of self-determination and alliance solidarity.
Organizers and participants alike say the protests show unwavering public opposition to any foreign takeover and a strong commitment to preserving Greenland’s cultural identity and future.
