Russian President Vladimir Putin has initiated
a high-stakes diplomatic effort to reduce tensions-
in the Middle East by holding direct phone-
calls with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin –
Netanyahu and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian,
the Kremlin said on Friday. The outreach comes at a time of heightened concern over potential regional instability.
According to official statements, Putin spoke separately
with Netanyahu and Pezeshkian as part of Russia’s attempt to position itself as a mediato
r in the increasingly volatile situation.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stressed that “the situation in the region is highly tense,”
and that the Russian president remains committed to facilitating dialogue and “de-escalation”.
In his call with Iran’s President Pezeshkian,
Putin reaffirmed Russia’s intention to strengthen ties with Tehran and expressed concern over any escalation that could destabilize regional security. The Iranian leader thanked Moscow for its diplomatic support,
reflecting the historically close — though complex — relationship between the two nations.
At the same time, Putin’s discussion with Netanyahu highlighted Russia’s readiness to assist in peaceful solutions between Israel and Iran.
While details of the mediation efforts were not fully disclosed, the Kremlin stated that Moscow is prepared to continue diplomatic engagement with all parties.
This diplomatic push unfolds amid mounting tensions following a brief conflict last year,
in which Israel carried out rare strikes against Iranian military installations,
and the United States briefly joined in targeting key nuclear sites.
Independent monitors also report that widespread protests in Iran have been met with a severe crackdown by security forces,
prompting fears of further escalation.
Putin’s efforts underscore Russia’s evolving role as a potential mediator in Middle Eastern crises,
even as it seeks to balance its strategic partnerships with Tehran and its working relationship with Jerusalem. Analysts note that this approach reflects Moscow’s broader goal of maintaining influence in the region while preventing wider conflict.
