UK MP Sparks Controversy After Addressing Somaliland Protesters in LondonA political controversy has erupted in the United Kingdom
after a British Member of Parliament addressed a protest organized by members of the Somaliland community in London,
where he openly expressed support for the recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.
The protest, held in a public area of the UK capital,
drew dozens of Somaliland supporters who were calling on the British government to formally
recognize Somaliland’s self-declared independence.
Demonstrators waved Somaliland flags, chanted slogans demanding international recognition,
and highlighted what they described as Somaliland’s relative stability compared to the rest of Somalia.
During his remarks, the MP praised Somaliland’s governance and security record,
stating that he hoped the UK government would one day recognize Somaliland as a sovereign nation.
His comments quickly went viral on social media, triggering strong reactions across the Horn of Africa and beyond.
In his speech, the lawmaker sharply criticized Somalia’s federal government, making comments that were widely described as inflammatory.
These remarks prompted backlash from Somali officials, analysts, and members of the diaspora, who accused the MP of undermining Somalia’s sovereignty and promoting divisive rhetoric.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of Somalia’s central government.
While it has maintained its own institutions, currency, and security forces for more than three decades, it remains unrecognized by the United Nations and the international community,
which continues to regard Somaliland as part of Somalia.
Observers say the incident highlights the growing international debate over Somaliland’s status,
as well as the influence of diaspora activism in Western capitals.
However, UK government officials have repeatedly reaffirmed that Britain’s official position remains unchanged, supporting Somalia’s territorial integrity.
The comments have added fuel to an already sensitive political issue, with analysts warning that
such statements by foreign politicians could further complicate regional diplomacy in the Horn of Africa.
