Severe flash flooding has overwhelmed parts of Hawaii, forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes as emergency teams race to respond.
Heavy rainfall has triggered widespread evacuations along the northern coast of Oahu, marking what officials describe as the most serious flooding event the state has experienced in two decades.
Authorities issued urgent warnings early Saturday, particularly for communities such as Waialua, urging residents to evacuate immediately due to the risk of road collapse and worsening conditions.
At least 5,500 people have been ordered to evacuate areas north of Honolulu as floodwaters continue to rise.
Rescue Efforts Underway

So far, no fatalities have been reported. However, the situation remains critical:
More than 200 individuals have been rescued from flooded neighborhoods
Ten people were hospitalized with hypothermia after being pulled from cold, muddy waters
Entire streets and residential areas have been submerged
Emergency crews, including air rescue teams, have been deployed to reach stranded residents.
A youth camp operated by Our Lady of Kea’au was evacuated as a precaution, with 72 children and adults airlifted to safety.
More Rain Expected
Weather forecasts indicate that additional heavy rainfall is expected in the coming days, raising concerns that the situation could worsen.
Officials warn that continued rain may further strain already flooded areas and increase the likelihood of infrastructure failure.
Growing Concern Over Wahiawa Dam
One of the most alarming risks is the potential failure of the Wahiawa dam, a structure more than a century old.
Authorities have warned that the dam is at risk of imminent failure as water levels continue to rise dangerously close to its maximum capacity.
The dam has long been classified as a high-risk structure, meaning that a collapse could result in significant loss of life.
Originally built in 1906 and later rebuilt after a collapse in 1921, the dam was designed to support agricultural production in the region.
Over the years, it has faced repeated safety concerns, including multiple warnings about structural weaknesses and maintenance issues.
Although officials have stated that the dam is currently functioning as intended, past assessments raised doubts about its ability to withstand extreme flooding conditions.
Economic Impact Could Be Massive

Hawaii’s governor has estimated that the total damage from the floods could exceed $1 billion.
Floodwaters in some areas have reached chest height, destroying homes, damaging infrastructure, and displacing entire communities.
Local authorities believe that hundreds of homes have already been affected, though the full scale of destruction is still being assessed.
A Worsening Crisis
Additional rainfall expected over the next few days could add 15 to 20 centimeters (6 to 8 inches) of water, further intensifying the crisis.
Officials have described the situation as catastrophic, warning that conditions may deteriorate before they improve.
Emergency services, including the National Guard, remain actively engaged in rescue and relief operations as Hawaii faces one of its most dangerous natural disasters in recent history.
