The Department of Defense has officially released the identities of six U.S. Air Force members who perished following an aviation incident in western Iraq.
The fallen crew included a diverse group of dedicated professionals: a squadron operations chief who had recently qualified as a pilot, a major responsible for the flight proficiency of dozens of personnel, and a technical sergeant celebrated by peers for a radiant personality and commitment to service.
The Incident and Mission Details
The airmen were operating a KC-135 Stratotanker, a critical asset used for midair refueling, when the aircraft went down during a mission. Military officials have clarified that the crash was not the result of hostile or friendly fire.
The mission was part of Operation Epic Fury, the Pentagon’s designated name for ongoing regional operations. A second aircraft involved in the same operation was able to return to base and land safely.
The KC-135 is a versatile platform, often utilized not just for extending the range of combat jets, but also for transporting cargo and conducting medical evacuations.
