DOHA, Qatar — Qatari authorities have confirmed they are actively working with international mediators to facilitate the reopening of the Rafah border crossing, a vital lifeline for the Gaza Strip.Aid organizations continue to warn that persistent Israeli barriers are obstructing the flow of essential supplies.
These restrictions are viewed as a direct breach of the ceasefire terms established on October 10, especially as the Rafah gateway to Egypt stays inaccessible to the public.
For years, this crossing served as Gaza’s primary link to the international community until Israeli forces seized control of the Palestinian side in May 2024.According to a recent report by Israel’s Kan broadcaster on January 1, there are indications that the crossing may soon resume operations in both directions.
This potential policy shift follows significant diplomatic pressure from US President Donald Trump. If implemented, this move would reverse a controversial Israeli stance that previously allowed the crossing to be used solely for the permanent exit of Palestinians.
That earlier policy was heavily criticized by regional powers, including Egypt and Qatar, who voiced grave concerns over the risk of forced displacement or ethnic cleansing in the territory. The news has sparked a glimmer of hope among the residents of Gaza.
Tasnim Jaras, a student currently in Gaza City, shared with reporters that her greatest aspiration is for the border to open so she can resume her academic journey. Similarly, Moaeen al-Jarousha, an individual injured during the conflict, emphasized the life-saving importance of the crossing. “I am in desperate need of urgent medical care outside of Gaza,” he explained, highlighting the dire humanitarian situation.
