Future Council Leaves Meeting with President Hassan Sheikh Without Agreement
-The Somali Future Council announced that its recent meetings with President Hassan Sheikh ended without any agreement, following two consecutive discussions held between the opposition bloc and the federal leadership.
According to the Council, President Hassan Sheikh withdrew from reaching a political settlement during the final sessions.
The opposition interprets this move as an indication that the President may be seeking a term extension beyond the agreed electoral framework.
The President, who in 2021 openly opposed holding a one-person-one-vote election during the final phase of the previous administration,
is now reportedly pushing for elections without a finalized political consensus.
Critics argue that the constitutional process remains incomplete and that key decisions are being centralized without broad agreement among political stakeholders.
The ongoing disagreement raises further uncertainty over Somalia’s 2026 electoral process and highlights the deep political divisions that continue to shape the country’s governance landscape.
