The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured a commanding two-thirds
majority in Bangladeshโs 2026 general election, marking a dramatic return to power after two decades in opposition.
According to preliminary tallies, the BNP and its allied parties captured at least 212 out of 299 parliamentary seats in the Jatiya Sangsad.
The Jamaat-e-Islami and its coalition partners won around 70 seats.
Official figures from the Election Commission initially placed the BNP at 181
seats, Jamaat-e-Islami at 61, and smaller parties and independents with a handful of remaining constituencies, pending final confirmation.
Return to Power After Political UpheavalThe election was widely viewed
as a decisive moment for stability following months of unrest that led to the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024 during a youth-driven protest movement.
The BNPโs victory is seen as restoring competitive electoral politics after years marked by boycotts and contested polls.
The party urged supporters not to hold large victory rallies and instead called for national prayers.
BNP leader Tarique Rahman, son of former President Ziaur Rahman, is expected to be sworn in as prime minister.
He recently returned to Dhaka after spending 18 years abroad.
Voter Turnout and Public ExpectationsVoter participation was significantly higher than in the previous election, with media estimates suggesting nearly 60% turnout.
The election also featured more than 2,000 candidates from a record number of political parties.
In addition, a referendum on constitutional reforms was held alongside the vote. Proposed amendments
include:
Limiting prime ministers to two terms Strengthening judicial independenceExpanding womenโs representation Establishing neutral caretaker governments during election periodsCreating a second parliamentary chamberPreliminary reports indicated strong support for the reforms, though final confirmation is pending.
Economic Stability a Key PriorityBangladesh, a nation of 175 million
people and the worldโs second-largest garment exporter, has faced economic disruptions due to political instability.
Industry workers expressed hope that the new government would restore order and attract international business.
In its manifesto, the BNP pledged to prioritize job creation, protect vulnerable households, and ensure fair agricultural pricing.
Economic analysts believe the partyโs strong parliamentary majority could allow it to pass reforms quickly and prevent legislative deadlock.
Regional and International ReactionRegional leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif,
were among the first to congratulate Rahman on the victory.
The United States also extended congratulations through its diplomatic representatives.
Political Context
The BNPโs seat count surpasses its 2001 victory and represents one of the largest wins in the countryโs history.
However, previous elections were often marred by boycotts or controversy.
This vote is being described by observers as one of the most competitive in recent years.
With a decisive mandate and reform agenda ahead, the incoming administration now faces the challenge of transforming electoral momentum into long-term political and economic stability.
