The military said the operation took place on Monday and described it as a โlethal kinetic strikeโ against a vessel it alleged was involved in drug trafficking.
SOUTHCOM did not provide evidence to support the claim.
According to the statement, the US Coast Guard was immediately notified following
the attack in order to activate search and rescue efforts for the surviving individual.
No further details were given regarding the survivorโs condition or the likelihood
of recovery.
This marks the latest in a series of US military operations targeting vessels in international waters off Latin America.
Last week, Washington acknowledged responsibility for another strike in the same region that also resulted in two deaths.
Media tallies and monitoring groups report that the United States has now
carried out approximately 37 attacks onโ 39 vessels in the eastern Pacific and Caribbean regions, resulting in at least 130 deaths.
The operations have drawn sharp criticism from legal experts, human rights advocates, and regional leaders,
who accuse the US of conducting extrajudicial killings by acting as judge,
jury, and executioner against individuals suspected of drug trafficking.
The controversy has intensified under President Donald Trumpโs administration,
particularly following reports that an earlier strike in September 2025 may have included a follow-up attack that killed survivors clinging to the wreckage of a destroyed vessel.
Legal analysts have warned that such actions, if confirmed, could constitute violations of international law.
SOUTH COM also released a brief video showing the moment of Mondayโs strike, depicting a small motorized boat being targeted and struck,
resulting in an explosion that set the vessel ablaze.Despite growing scrutiny,
the US military appears undeterred, continuing its aggressive maritime operations in international waters across the region.
