The Somali House of Representatives is currently surrounded by police forces following a sharp rejection of Villa Somalia’s request to amend the provisional constitution earlier this January 2026.
Reports indicate that lawmakers are under strict security measures to prevent unrest and clashes after a physical fight broke out during the previous parliamentary session.
Somalia’s Parliament Speaker Aden Madobe and the President remain hopeful of constitutional reforms, but have assured the public that no major changes will be made; instead, they plan to complete the constitution.
The proposed amendments are viewed by many as a political battle, potentially orchestrated by Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to extend his term, given the presidential election scheduled for May 15, 2026.
