—Breaking News โ Mogadishu, January 2026A handover ceremony was held today at the Ministry of Defense of the Federal Government of Somalia,
marking a leadership transition within the Somali National Army.
The newly appointed Commander of the Somali National Army, Ibrahim, was officially handed over the position during the ceremony.
The event was attended by the Prime Minister of Somalia and the Minister of Defense.Outgoing Commander Odawaa,
who was relieved of his duties for the second time, addressed the audience during the handover.
He said:> โI am happy today to hand over this responsibility to one of the children I personally raised and trained to become leaders of this country.
A leader is usually known for feeling anger or sadness on the day power is taken from him, but I am happy to hand over this position.
โThe newly appointed commander also delivered a speech accepting the responsibility after extended greetings and light remarks, stating:> โI officially accept the responsibility entrusted to me
. Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.โ
Analysis The Federal Government of Somalia has faced criticism for removing Commander Odawaa from his position for the second time without granting him sufficient time to gain leadership experience.
During the tenure of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed (Farmaajo), Commander Odawaa was never removed from his post.
However, under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the commander was removed twice.
Critics argue that this has contributed to confusion, lack of strategy, reduced military operations,
deteriorating security conditions, and worsening circumstances for the armed forces.
It is further argued that national leadership failed to consider the potential challenges such decisions could pose to military operations against armed groups such as Al-Shabab and ISIS.
