The United States has, for the first time, openly indicated interest in liquefied natural gas (LNG) resources located off the coast of Somalia.
The development follows remarks aired by a media outlet close to the Trump administration, quoting a senior official from the US Africa Command (AFRICOM),
who suggested that American military operations in Somalia could pave the way for major commercial opportunities.
The official explained that Somalia possesses significant natural resources that have remained largely untapped due to long-standing security challenges.
He noted that areas along the coast near Mogadishu contain substantial reserves of liquefied natural gas.
According to him, private sector investment represents one of the most powerful tools the United States can leverage in Africa.
He added that attracting large-scale private investment—similar to what has occurred in other African countries—
could serve as a long-term guarantee for stability and security in Somalia,
linking economic development directly to improved security conditions.
