Politics President Donald Trump has called on Republicans to โnationalize the votingโ as his administration pushes to โ
reshape election rules ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
Speaking in a recent interview, Trump said Republicans should take control of voting processes in multiple states, โ
arguing that elections in certain areas are dishonest and improperly counted.
He claimed that some states he believes he won did not reflect that outcome in their results.
Trumpโs remarks come shortly after federal agents searched an elections office in Fulton County, Georgia.
The search was part of a Justice Department effort to obtain election records related to allegations of voter fraud, claims that Trump has repeatedly made despite lacking evidence.
According to officials familiar with the matter,
the president was directly involved in the operation and expressed strong interest in the investigation.
Intelligence officials confirmed that Trump instructed senior members of his โ
administration to oversee aspects of the search and communicate with agents involved.
Elections in the United States are traditionally administered by state and local authorities, with the federal government playing a limited role.
However, Trump has repeatedly sought to expand federal influence over election procedures.
Last year, he signed an executive order aimed at requiring proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration and blocking the counting of mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day.
Parts of the order were later blocked by federal courts, and existing law already prohibits non-citizens from voting in federal elections.
Trump has also publicly opposed mail-in voting and voting machines, claimingโ
without evidenceโthat they contribute to election fraud.
He has pledged to lead efforts to on addition, the administration has supported a rare mid-decade redistricting
push intended to improve Republican prospects in the House of Representatives during the midterms.
The Justice Department has also filed lawsuits against multiple states seeking access to full voter rolls, including sensitive personal information.
Officials have not provided independent evidence to support claims that undocumented immigrants have affected election outcomes.
In response, Democratic election officials in several states have begun preparing for potential federal involvement in the midterm elections.
Some have discussed measures to protect voters and manage federal requests for access to election-related data.
While officials have avoided sharing detailed plans publicly, they say preparations are evolving as they assess new risks to election administration.
