Trump Announces Trade Deal With India Including Tariff Cuts and Shift From Russian Oil
The United States and India have agreed on a new bilateral trade deal,
announced by U.S. President Donald Trump following a phone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Under the agreement, the U.S. will reduce tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 18%,
while India has signaled its willingness to end purchases of Russian crude oil,
according to official remarks and multiple sources.
President Trump framed the pact as part of a broader strategy to constrain Russia’s economy and reduce its ability to fund the war in Ukraine.
As a result of India’s commitment, punitive tariffs previously imposed due to its Russian oil purchases are also expected to be withdrawn.
In return, India is expected to diversify its energy imports by increasing purchases of U.S. oil and potentially Venezuelan crude,
shifting away from a heavy reliance on discounted Russian supplies that had accounted for a large share of its energy imports.
The agreement also includes the possibility that India will reduce or eliminate tariffs and non-tariff barriers on
U.S. goods, opening greater access for American energy, agricultural products, technology, and industrial exports.
Trump has linked the deal to wider economic cooperation, including potential commitments reaching hundreds of billions of dollars.
Indian leaders welcomed the tariff reduction, noting that lower rates will benefit exporters and strengthen commercial ties with the United States.
However, official statements from New Delhi have not yet confirmed the full details concerning the cessation of—
Russian oil purchases or the scale of future energy imports from the U.S. and Venezuela.
Analysts say the deal represents a significant realignment in global trade and energy relations,
given India’s previous status as one of Russia’s major crude customers.
The shift illustrates how economic diplomacy and energy policy are being used as levers in broader geopolitical contests.
